Who We Are

Where We Started

The coalition kicked off in March 2020 during the COVID pandemic. Over the next few years, we built momentum – pushing Newsom for more funding in 2021, introducing our first bill to extend unemployment benefits to immigrant workers in 2022, and marching on Sacramento with over a thousand people in 2023. Though Newsom vetoed our bill in 2024, we spent 2025 regrouping and getting ready to relaunch with a new identity.

Where We Are Now

After our January 2025 retreat, the coalition rebranded from “Safety Net Coalition for Everyone” to “California Network for Immigrant and Worker Justice.” The change was strategic – we wanted a name that clearly represents undocumented workers and positions us as the leading coalition in California on these issues. When legislators refuse to meet with us or offer support, the new name makes it crystal clear whose interests are being ignored. The rebranding doesn’t change our structure or commitment, just strengthens how we present ourselves.

What We're Fighting For

Our main goal hasn’t changed: creating a safety net for all workers, especially undocumented ones. For 2026, we’re pursuing three legislative paths – an emergency fund for workers affected by immigration raids, a permanent fund supported by employer payroll taxes, or an unemployment benefits program without dedicated funding. Each option has different hurdles (Newsom’s opposition, employer pushback, budget deficits), but they’re all aimed at the same thing: getting financial support and benefits for undocumented workers across California.

Our structure

Our coalition is broken down into 5 committees that take on the work of leading and implementing the strategy that our delegades vote on.

The Role of Delegades

Our delegades are the frontline leaders in our fight for immigrant justice. We are firmly committed to supporting their leadership, increasing their numbers, and expanding their reach.
