History

Since the start of the pandemic, we’ve been fighting for the rights of immigrant workers, putting pressure on our political leaders to treat all workers equally.

2020
Born From Crisis

The Safety Net Coalition for Everyone was born out of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis we faced in March 2020.

2021
Governor Newsom Steps Up

Governor Newsom stepped up and introduced the Golden State stimulus proposal. Our coalition pushed to demand more funding be made available.

2022
Safety Net 4 All Introduced

We introduced, for the first time, a bill that would end the exclusion of immigrant workers who lack access to unemployment insurance.

2023
We March for Workers

We led a march in Sacramento of over a thousand coalition members across the state of California.

2024
Governor Newsom Vetoes our Bill

The bill reached the governor's desk and though it had the support of over 150 community organizations from across the state, Governor Newsom opted to veto the bill.

2025
We Refocus on the Fight

The Safety Net for All Coalition focused the year on internal growth, sharpening our analysis and preparing for our relaunch as the California Network for Immigrant and Worker Justice. This entailed the work of having our delegades vote on our new name, help design our new logo and work to embed their analysis in our new website and outward facing materials.

2026
AB 2271 and the Official Relaunch of our coalition

As working class immigrant communities continue to reel from the effects of the Trump administration’s unfettered attacks on working immigrants through militarized raids, we are focusing our efforts on AB 2271, the Immigration Enforcement Emergency Relief Fund. This is our push to ensure emergency relief for those impacted by the mass raids and build a broad tent of support towards a long-term unemployment safety net that includes all of California’s workers.
